Pensé pendant un moment comme un éventuel single, Star Shaped représente une évolution considérable dans l'écriture de Damon.
Andy Partridge les avait forcé à prendre un arangement de samba, détesté de tous.

L'idée vient d'un sous-titre de Breakfast Of Champions: l'image "star-shaped" renvoie à l'image d'une silhouette allongée sur une plage.
"Star Shaped" veut ici dire "insensible".

Les instruments à vents et les cuivres sont interprétés par Kate St John, une ancienne collaboratrice de Julian Cope autour de 1983.
